Jimmie Johnson Memorial Park Popular Among Young Crowds
Come for the cool ambience, stay for a pick-up game. The Jimmie Johnson Memorial Park is located on Greenwood near the intersection of Fifth Street and has been home to many basketball games. Pass by any given time of the day and you'll find kids practicing their free throws after school, adults on their lunch break enjoying a midday exercise regimen or a late afternoon or weekend game of 21.
The park was named in honor of James O’Neal “Coach Jimmie” Johnson.
In 1946, Johnson enlisted in the 812th Engineer Aviation Battalion in the US Army Air Corps qualifying as a sharpshooter.
Coach Jimmie and his wife, Deloris were married for 26 years. Much of their married life was devoted to “all kids in the community.” They were most notably known for their free basketball clinics at Morgan City Junior High School from 1996-2019. Johnson passed away in August 2019. He spent close to 60 years involved with St. Mary Parish community sporting activities.
